Daisy May Cooper has revealed she hid her battle with depression because she was afraid of being seen as an “unfit mother” and having her children taken away.

The 36-year-old actress admitted she felt suicidal but said she had “no choice” to end her life because her children depended on her: Pip, four, and Jack, two.

In a candid interview with Grazia magazine, Daisy described her mental health struggles as she struggled to come to terms with the breakdown of her marriage during lockdown.

The This Country star split from husband Will Weston in July 2021 after two years of marriage and shortly after the birth of their second child in October 2020.

Daisy admitted she hit rock bottom before they split, but confessed she didn’t feel able to open up about her feelings.

She explained: “I couldn’t admit that I had completely lost my identity. I was afraid if I spoke about the struggles that someone would say, “Oh, you’re not a fit mom, you should let your kids take care of you.”

Daisy opened up during a chat with her friend and future Am I being unreasonable? Co-star Seline Hizli recalled, “We both broke down on the phone and I said … she’s taking a break. I felt suicidal, I f king felt suicidal, and what made me even more angry was that I had two kids.

“I couldn’t fucking commit suicide. I didn’t even have a choice to surpass myself because I have these two children who depend on me. And I felt even more trapped in it, was it awful?’

With Selin’s support, Daisy found the courage to leave her loveless marriage and focus on her mental health, admitting that without the intervention she suspects she would have been committed to a mental hospital.

Following her split from Will, Daisy dated Ryan Weymouth during a whirlwind five-month romance in which she got his name tattooed on her ring finger.

They ended their relationship about two weeks after she got the tattoo – which has since covered her – but said she doesn’t care about inking as she makes the mistakes she thought she “couldn’t make” before “.

Daisy recently said she likes dating now but isn’t in a serious relationship as she admitted she doesn’t think she could live with a man again.

A source told The Sun at the time of their divorce: “Daisy said she was growing fed up with married life and was struggling with her relationship with Will.

“They finally ended things earlier this year. She took off her wedding ring and told her friends her marriage is over.

“She also removed Will as director of her media business. It’s been a tough 17 months for everyone and Daisy and Will were no exception.”

Daisy recently admitted she was beginning to consider a divorce after reading a heartbreaking post on Mumsnet by a woman in her 70s who felt “trapped” in her marriage.

Daisy added that when she became friends with Selin, they spoke openly about what was happening in her life, with Daisy explaining that she realized what “true love” was because she felt “understood” by her friend.

The couple are currently starring together in their critically acclaimed BBC series Am I Being Unreasonable? which was partly inspired by Daisy’s marital problems.
