FRISCO – Dallas Cowboys fans are well aware of the “cap” allegations that are leveled at the club every year by team owner Jerry Jones. But relief is around the corner as quarterback Dak Prescott’s new $160 million deal signed last spring is part of the “problem” as it stands, but part of the solution in the coming days.
As team sources told CowboysSI.com some time ago, the design of the deal includes a “flick of the switch” that, if executed, could give Dallas $15 million to $16 million in waivers in 2022. In addition, the team can transfer money to security. Zach Martin in such a way that he gets a room for 7 million dollars.

Prescott has about $15 million, Martin has about $7 million. Result: Creation of over $22 million as the league’s 2022 cap.
By March 16 (the start of the NFL’s fiscal year), teams must meet the $208 million cap.

In Duck’s case: It doesn’t require revision, It doesn’t require sacrifice. It does not require approval.
It’s already been approved.
In layman’s terms, the money that should have been paid into Duck’s left pocket will now be tucked into his right pocket, an accounting trick that explains the invalid years at the end of his deal. He is currently scheduled for a “zero” salary in the final year of his contract when he turns 33. This step will change that.
Martin has a $20 million cap in 2022, but Dallas will add invalid years to distribute that money.
The best scripted Duck was still playing at the time, and so making money moved to 2026 back in 2022. The same hope will be for All-Pro Martin.

Duck still gets his money and Dallas still thinks he’s the guy. As Jones recently said, “Duck has played at a level that can take teams to the Super Bowl and win the Super Bowl. … He’s probably at the top of the list (reasons for the Cowboys to be optimistic).
