Damage from torrential rains in India widens

The Asian country’s meteorological office forecast sustained heavy rains in Odisha, Jharkhand, Assam, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Delhi-NCR and Maharashtra for the next two to three days.

The forecasting agency also reported the formation of a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal region, cyclone circulation over the Kutch region of Gujarat and an active low-pressure system stretching from Maharashtra to the Karnataka coast, which could worsen the current weather conditions.

Heavy rains have hit Mumbai and its suburbs in the past 24 hours, causing flooding and the collapse of several buildings, killing at least four people and injuring several.

Odisha received an emergency warning due to severe weather that could hit the state in the coming days.

In Mandi in Himachal Pradesh, rains triggered a landslide on the Chandigarh-Manali highway, while flash floods in Solan and flooding in Shimla, Mandi and Kullu swamped homes, swept livestock and damaged crops.

The Jammu-Srinagar national road remained blocked after mudslides on Monday, and flooding affected around 170,000 people in Barpeta district in Assam state.

Punjab and Haryana are on alert after heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and wind gusts of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour; while Delhi expects similar weather conditions this Monday and Tuesday tomorrow.

Dust storms will also occur in Sri Ganganagar in Rajasthan, where several locations are experiencing extreme waterlogging, according to the weather agency.
