Pro Football Network’s Tony Pauline reported today that the San Francisco 49ers are putting down a base bid of just under $19 million a year for wide receiver Deebo Samuel. Some, like Samuel’s camp, may find such an offer offensive.
95.7 The Game’s Damon Bruce insists the situation is worse and says the 49ers have yet to make an offer to Samuel and his agent – at all. Well, it’s worth noting that there is a lot of speculation swirling around in the NFL media landscape right now, making it difficult to determine what is true and what is flat out false. As Samuel recently said, only he, his agent and the 49ers know the truth, and neither of them discuss the situation at length.
“Although there are conflicting stories of an opening position the Niners put before Deebo Samuel, I got it from someone very close to her [to the situation] that the 49ers haven’t put an offer on the table yet,” Bruce said on air Thursday. The insult was basically the Niners saying, ‘We’ll give you an overtime when we’re good and ready, and you’re our player until we say otherwise.'”
If it’s true… ouch. That would definitely cause problems.
“Apparently there’s a little disrespectful communication going on as far as Camp Deebo is concerned,” Bruce continued. “But like the Niners say, they’re willing to pay a price. You have yet to tell Deebo Samuel what that price is. I’ll report to you [that] Sources close to the negotiations say the Niners haven’t even made an opening offer.”
Bruce added: “I would happily challenge Matt Maiocco, Matt Barrows and anyone close enough to getting to the bottom of this answer to prove me wrong. …Show me the evidence that the Niners put an offer on the table because today I was told there wasn’t one.”
Perhaps the 49ers will shed some light on the situation Monday when the team is scheduled to hold its annual pre-draft media meeting. Last year, both general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan attended. Of course, the team is unlikely to reveal too much about the situation with the draft just days later.

Irons: Jets should offer the 49ers WR Deebo Samuel as the No. 10 overall
The New York Jets own the No. 4 overall standings. They also own number 10 overall. One media personality, Rich Eisen, believes Jets head coach Robert Saleh should pick up the phone, call his former team, the San Francisco 49ers, and help facilitate a trade — with the help of general manager Joe Douglas, of course. “The Jets were on Tyreek Hill in March on ‘The hell going on’ day,” Eisen said on The Rich Eisen Show. “They offered two [second-round picks] for him. … They don’t act [their first-round picks] for Tyreek Hill. Deebo is a different story.” Eisen suggests the Jets trade the No. 10 overall for the disgruntled 49ers
Florio: Why Deebo Samuel has to take a stand when dealing with the 49ers
Deebo Samuel wants to make money this off-season. The dynamic third-year wide receiver is entering the final year of his rookie deal and had a breakout season in 2021. It’s been a wild NFL offseason, and Samuel has seen several of his peers get paid. $140 million over five years for Davante Adams. $120 million over four years for Tyreek Hill. $104 million over four years for Stefon Diggs. There is a lot of talk about Samuel’s actions on social media. The recipient has removed his profile photo, which once showed him in his 49ers uniform, from Instagram and every other game day photo on his account. While this will be Samuel’s first deal after the rookie contract, Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio explains why there may be more urgency for Samuel’s camp to get the receiver
Peter King on why Deebo Samuel will test ‘the negotiating skills’ of the 49ers
Deebo Samuel obviously wants to cash in as long as his stocks are high. And thanks to last season’s breakout performance, that stock price has skyrocketed. Are the San Francisco 49ers now ready to financially commit to the young wide receiver after surpassing the 1,000 receiving yards mark in just one season? In 2021, however, Samuel proved to be much more than a wide receiver. His 1,770 total yards and 14 total touchdowns included 365 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns, the latter being an NFL record for a wide receiver. Oh, and he had a passing touchdown, too. Just naming Samuel a wide receiver would be a disservice. He often appeared in the backfield as a running back, ready and able to take the hard hits from defenders and defenders
Michael Irvin explains why Deebo Samuel and the 49ers need each other
Michael Irvin, like The Faithful, hopes Deebo Samuel doesn’t leave the San Francisco 49ers anytime soon. The wide receiver is entitled to a contract extension. Yes, it’s only April. There is plenty of time to get things moving. However, recent talks revolved around Samuel purging his Instagram account of anything 49ers-related. This includes his profile picture and photos from the game day. Samuel has proven to be one of the team’s best players over the past season. In fact, his breakout season, totaling 1,770 yards and 14 total touchdowns – not counting his touchdown pass – showed everyone he’s one of the brightest young, dynamic players in the league. While the 49ers definitely need Samuel on their roster, Irvin believes in the fourth-year wide receiver
