CASE DANIEL ALVES
Daniel Alves was arrested on January 20th. He was arrested while testifying against a woman in the early hours of December 30 in a sexual assault case. Prosecutors requested the 39yearold athlete’s preventive detention without bail and the owner of the Barcelona PreTrial Court 15 granted the request and ordered his arrest.
The allegation relates to an episode said to have happened at the Sutton nightclub in Barcelona, Spain. The athlete, who defended the Brazilian team at the World Cup in Qatar, allegedly locked the complainant in a bathroom in the VIP area of the nightclub, assaulted him and raped him, according to the newspaper El Periódico. She sought her friends and safety at the club after the incident.
The nightclub’s security team called the Catalan Police (Mossos d’Esquadra), who took a statement from the victim. A camera worn on a police officer’s uniform accidentally recorded the first version of the victim’s case, confirming what she said in the official statement. The woman was also given a medical examination at a hospital. Daniel Alves left the scene before the police arrived.
According to the Spanish press, the inconsistency in the testimony of the defense attorney was crucial to the country’s prosecutor requesting the arrest and the judge agreeing to it. In early January, the player gave an interview to Antena 3’s Y Ahora Sonsoles show, in which he confirmed that he was at the same nightclub as the woman accusing him, but denied touching the complainant without her consent, saying so he didn’t even know her.
