Candidate Daniel Noboa, 35, will become Ecuador’s youngest president by winning the runoff election this Sunday against Luisa González of the left-wing Citizens Revolutionary Movement, the National Electoral Council (CNE) confirmed.
Since more than 90 percent of the protocols have been examined, this trend is irreversible and therefore the representative of the National Democratic Action alliance will be the successor to Guillermo Lasso.
CNE leader Diana Atamaint reported on national television that the representative of the National Democratic Action (ADN) alliance had 52.3 percent of the vote, while his opponent had 47.7 percent.
In the first round of the current electoral process, Noboa was not considered one of the favorites and surprised with 23 percent support, which catapulted him into Sunday’s runoff against González, who was the favorite in the first round.
The Citizen Revolution candidate acknowledged her opponent’s victory because her movement “respects democracy” and thanked everyone who trusted her.
Although he claims to be center-left, in practice, according to analysts, Noboa defends the interests of the right, neoliberalism and the business sector.
Furthermore, he welcomes a country that is mired in the worst security crisis in history and has economic problems that will be difficult to resolve in just a year and a half in office.
However, in a recent interview with a local media outlet, the newly elected president expressed his intention to run again in 2025.
Daniel Noboa is the son of one of Ecuador’s richest men, Álvaro Noboa, who tried unsuccessfully to become president of the republic five times.
This Sunday morning, Lasso announced that he was ready to begin the transition next Tuesday.
