Data loss: Italy to ChatGPT

Authority criticizes data protection violations.

Rom ChatGPT will be blocked in Italy depending on compliance with privacy regulations. This was decided by the Italian authority for the protection of personal data. It opened a preliminary investigation and ordered the restriction of data processing of Italian users by OpenAI, the US company that developed the ChatGPT platform.

ChatGPT, the best-known artificial intelligence software, suffered a data leak on March 20, affecting user conversations and payment information for subscribers of its paid service. The Italian authority noted that all those whose data is collected by OpenAI were not informed, but more importantly that there is no legal basis that justifies the collection and massive storage of personal data for the purpose of “training” the algorithms. Although the service is aimed at those over 13 years old, there is also no filter to verify the age of users. The company must inform within 20 days what measures it has taken to protect the data. Otherwise, you risk a fine of up to €20 million or four percent of your annual worldwide turnover. (APA)
