The daughter of former Iranian President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani has been sentenced to five years in prison for “propaganda” against the Islamic Republic and crimes against national security. The announcement was made by his lawyer Neda Shams to the AFP news agency on Monday. Shams also announced that she would appeal the verdict.
Faeseh Hashemi Rafsanjani was arrested in the capital Tehran in late September. She was accused of calling for participation in the anti-government protests following the death of Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini following her arrest by the deputy squad.

Women’s rights activist and former parliamentarian Faeseh Hashemi Rafsanjani has been targeted by the Iranian judiciary several times. According to a judicial spokesman, she was sentenced to 15 months in prison in March 2022 and was banned from internet activities for two years. In 2012, she was arrested for “propaganda” against the Islamic Republic and sentenced to six months in prison.
His father was president from 1989 to 1997. Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani was considered a moderate and worked to improve relations with the West. He died in 2017.
