Apparently Dave Chappelle doesn’t like the Golden State that much these days.

In a surprise performance Thursday night at San Francisco’s Masonic Auditorium, the controversial comedian expressed his contempt for the city and asked the audience a very important question.

“What the hell happened to this place?” he asked during his set, according to SFGATE’s review of the show.

During the performance, Chappelle, 49, spoke about the homelessness problem in San Francisco and reportedly shared a story about seeing someone poop right outside the restaurant he was about to eat at.

According to a February 2023 report by the Public Policy Institute of California, 30% of all people who became homeless in the United States last year lived in California.

Chappelle also said that The Bay Area has become “half ‘Glee’ half zombie movie” and joked that they needed “a Batman,” the outlet reported.

His take on San Francisco wasn’t all bad though — before opening up on the show’s reasons for why he didn’t seem to like being there, he described the city as his second home.

He explained that in the early days of his comedy career he appeared there many times – hundreds of times in fact.

The outlet also pointed out that there were no special guests present this time around — not even Twitter offspring Elon Musk, whom he brought to the stage during his recent visit to San Francisco.

In June, Chappelle will be heading to Pennsylvania for two shows, but it’s unclear if he’ll be landing in New York City any time soon.

The comedian has been marked by some controversy in recent years — including one last November, which took place when he was hosting “Saturday Night Live.”

Chappelle’s performance prompted some staffers on the late-night show to boycott the episode before he even showed up.

During his opening monologue on SNL, he opened up about the anti-Semitism of Kanye West and Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving at the time, and cracked some unsavory “jokes” about it.

“I’ve been to Hollywood — I don’t want you to get mad at me, I’m just telling you I’ve been to Hollywood, that’s exactly what I saw,” he once said during the monologue, also explaining that he denounced anti-Semitism in “all forms”. “There are many Jews.”

The performance met with backlash from many including Anti-Defamation League chief Jonathan Greenblatt.

“We shouldn’t expect @DaveChappelle to serve as society’s moral compass, but it’s troubling to see @nbcsnl not only normalize #antisemitism, but popularize it,” Greenblatt said tweeted later.

In 2021, Chappelle also found himself in controversy after the release of his Netflix standup special, The Closer, in which he made jokes about the transgender community.

In it, he described himself as a “trans-exclusionary radical feminist” and spoke about “Harry Potter” author JK Rowling.

Last May, while performing at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, he was attacked by a bystander armed with a fake gun containing a real knife.

He performed there as part of the “Netflix Is a Joke” festival.
