It’s not easy to work as a person who does the risky scenes in movies because they have to interpret all the most daring scenes that require more preparation such as .
Often these scenes do not go as planned and can endanger the life of the actor. This is what happened to David Holmes, the action double of Daniel Radcliffe, the protagonist of the Harry Potter saga.
For more than nine years, David Holmes did the stunts for Harry Potter. The actor at the time was perfect for the role as his height and physique were similar to the protagonist’s.
However, he never thought that he would be seriously injured by a bad stunt.

In 2009, one of the latest films, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”, was filmed, and Holmes was rehearsing a stunt scene but fell badly and broke his neck, leaving him paralyzed from the chest down.

Memories of Harry Potter
Holmes began playing Harry’s double when he was 17. His short stature made him perfect for 11-year-old Daniel Radcliffe. During this time they became good friends, and Holmes helped Radcliffe get in shape physically to perform stunts that required his face to appear on camera.
“We were at Alnwick Castle and there’s a scene where Harry has to hit a ball with a bat. As soon as Greg and I saw Dan swing the bat, he looked at me and said, ‘We have to work a little with him, you know?’ It was just the way Dan moved, you could tell he didn’t come from a sporting background,” Holmes recalled to Deadline media.

The acting couple continued to train hard, and gradually Radcliffe was able to take on bigger challenges, like that of the fourth film, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which involved a 35-foot (10-meter) fall. However, the most dangerous scenes were done by Holmes.
life after the accident
David Holmes currently has a podcast called Cunning Stunts where he shares his experiences of the Harry Potter saga. He also denounces the lack of knowledge about the actors who risk their lives for the entertainment.
Each chapter features candid conversations about the risks involved in the job and the stunt team responsible for mitigating the hazards.

“But at the same time, you shouldn’t go to work unless you’re willing to hope that there’s a chance things won’t go well and you might not get a second chance. I’ve suffered the ultimate price for what I love, but I’ll always say: I was a specialist, I went to work, I took that risk, I took that money,” Holmes said on his podcast.
There he also talks about the lack of knowledge people have about these actors and mentions that they should be given more credit.

“Olivia Jackson lost an arm in a production of ‘Resident Evil’ and left half of her body paralyzed. Other departments are recognized and we are not,” says Holmes.

Recording the podcast was Holmes’ way of letting off steam, since, as he says, his disability is a full-time job because he is constantly undergoing neurological changes. He also reaffirms this throughout the chapters of his program his spinal cord injury has worsened.
“There are people who are living much worse in this world at the moment. So I consider myself very fortunate,” concluded Holmes.
