Brewers general manager agrees to a 5-year deal to lead the front office in New York

NEW YORK – David Stearns grew up on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, a baseball-crazy Mets fan who stayed up late to listen to games and used the pillows on his bed to cushion indoor bullpen sessions. His grandfather captivated him to the game with stories of old New York baseball that he told from the seats of Shea Stadium.
With that in mind, Stearns entered the baseball industry immediately after graduating from Harvard, interning with the Mets before moving overseas for more than a decade. Now he is finally returning to where he was first captured as a child.
The Mets agreed to a five-year contract with Stearns on Tuesday to become their president of baseball operations, according to multiple sources. Stearns, 38, will leave his position in the Brewers organization to become the Mets’ highest-ranking baseball ops official.
The team has not yet confirmed the hiring and is not expected to formally introduce Stearns until after the regular season, a source said. According to another source, he remains under contract with the Brewers until this point, but was granted the right to enter into negotiations with other teams last month.
Given this opportunity to acquire one of the brightest young executives in baseball, the Mets jumped at it.
“It’s just another addition to the culture that this organization is trying to create,” said shortstop Francisco Lindor, speaking generally since the deal had not yet been completed.
