Day of protests in Chile on the anniversary of the social outbreak

On October 18, 2019, the social outbreak began in this capital, a movement against the rise in subway prices that spread across all regions and popular dissatisfaction with the neoliberal model in one of the most unequal countries in the world demonstrated.

The demonstrations were violently repressed by security forces, resulting in nearly 30 deaths, thousands injured and 460 people with eye damage from gunfire.

In the report Attention and monitoring of patients affected by state violence, the Health in Resistance movement revealed that the Carabineros force fired almost two million bullets in three months.

Four years after these events, the vast majority of human rights violations committed in this context have still not been solved.

According to data published here, only 0.2 percent of the 1,056 complaints filed about various abuses were addressed.

Among the demonstrations called for this Wednesday in the capital is a “backpack” in the Plaza de la Dignidad, the epicenter of these events.

Marches and pottery workshops are also planned towards La Moneda Palace, the seat of the presidency.

The Undersecretary of the Interior, Manuel Monsalve, announced the deployment of five thousand police officers to avoid daytime unrest, as had occurred on previous occasions.

This year the anniversary coincides with the celebration of the Pan American Games for the first time in history and the visit of delegations from 41 Olympic Committees on the continent.

The Ministry of Education has decided to suspend classes in secondary educational institutions in the municipalities of Santiago and Providencia.

Meanwhile, the University of Santiago de Chile will only conduct telematics courses to protect students.
