The 32-year-old veteran comes from the English club Leeds United, for whom he has played full-time since 2018. According to the Major League Soccer website, head coach Jesse Marsch wanted to continue the adventure with Klich but decided to look elsewhere for more playing time.

“Mateusz is a top midfielder who will add his major league experience to our squad. I’ve been watching him since he helped Leeds into the Premier League. His vision, the quality of his passing and his ability to score goals will be an advantage for us this season,” said coach Wayne Rooney, who is preparing for his first full season at the helm of DC, in a United press release .

Klich is the club’s third designated player after strikers Christian Benteke and Taxi Fountas. A clause in his contract could allow him to return for the 2025 season.

The Pole was surprisingly eliminated from Czeslaw Michniewicz’s squad at the recent FIFA World Cup. Klich has defended his country’s colors 41 times since 2011.

In 394 club games he scored 50 goals and added 59 assists.
