Not only did he improve his own performance by giving it his all, but he also enabled his co-star Robert De Niro to improve his performance as well, even if he had to sacrifice his ass to do it. The cinematographer of the aforementioned film revealed that the actor took real hits from De Niro’s paddle in his butt during a scene.

Even though he is known for delivering some of the most amazing performances in the history of cinema, most people don’t know how tough Leonardo DiCaprio’s tactics are to draw out those inspirations. From going the extra mile in The Revenant by living in a cold and harsh climate to eating raw meat, the star shares many other stories about pushing himself and throwing caution to the wind.

Likewise, he put the well-being of his bottom at risk when he filmed an excruciatingly painful spanking scene in his latest film, Killers of the Flower Moon.

In a recent conversation with Insider, Rodrigo Pietro, the cinematographer of the aforementioned film, revealed that the beating scene in which his character Ernest Burkhart is punished by his uncle William K. Hale, played by Robert De Niro, happened for real and that the star actually hit the Shutter Island star’s butt with a paddle.

That scene, in which DiCaprio wore padded pads to soften the blow, still caused him some pain, and that lasted a few takes, causing the star even more agony. He said:

“I remember doing them a few times and thinking, ‘Oh, that must hurt.'” His butt was padded. But you could tell that De Niro really nailed him. Leo is up for so much, he’ll do anything.”

When it comes to pushing the boundaries and going beyond, we now know that DiCaprio is by no means a lightweight.
