Deadpool 3 Hugh Jackman returns as Wolverine explains MCU timeline

Deadpool 3: Hugh Jackman returns as Wolverine, explains MCU timeline with Ryan Reynolds

Deadpool moves into the Marvel Cinematic Universe for his third film. And another familiar face joins the journey.

Hugh Jackman will play Wolverine in Deadpool 3. Ryan Reynolds, who plays Deadpool, announced the storyline and casting decision in a video released Tuesday further teased Wednesday.

The film is scheduled to hit theaters on September 6, 2024. (Yeah, sorry, 2024.)

“It’s hard for me to shut up about this,” Reynolds tweeted along with the short video. (“Mouth sewn shut” refers to a scene at the end of the 2009 film X-Men Origins: Wolverine in which Reynolds appears as Deadpool with his mouth sewn shut.)

He adds that Deadpool’s first appearance in the MCU must be special, as scenes show Reynolds exercising, using the toilet, and pouring Aviation American Gin – Reynolds has a financial stake in the company – into a coffee mug.

Reynolds then confesses that “we had an idea (to make the movie special)” before addressing Jackman, who wanders through the background.

“Hey Hugh?” Reynolds calls. “Do you want to play Wolverine again?”

Jackman agrees, and big words proclaim the film’s title “COMING HUGHN,” with the September 6, 2024 release date appearing at the end.

Reynolds’ first two Deadpool films took place in the same non-MCU continuity as the Fox X-Men films. Disney acquired Fox in 2019, and Deadpool 3’s writers vowed to keep the hero’s foul mouth intact, even as he’s been worked into the family-friendly MCU.

As for Jackman – spoilers ahead – he was thought to have retired from the iconic Wolverine role after the 2017 film Logan, which appeared to kill off the character. After this film, Jackman released a short video thanking his fans for their support over the years. Looks like it wasn’t a goodbye after all.

Reynolds released a follow-up video on Wednesday and promised to explain how Wolverine can return after the events of Logan.

“Quick explainer video that… 1) timeline questions, 2) Logan canon, 3) MCU FAQ, 4) whether or not we can do this all day,” the actor tweeted.

Sitting on a couch with Jackman, Reynolds remarks that Logan is set in 2029 and that the next Deadpool movie won’t change that. Before he can give more details, the 1984 Wham classic Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go drowns him out. Reynolds and Jackman are becoming more and more animated in their explanation, but we can’t fucking hear a thing.

The song cuts out in the final seconds, allowing us to hear the couple thank Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige.

“Thanks, MCU,” says Jackman.

Recent Marvel adventures seem to have unfolded towards the introduction of the X-Men, and it seems likely that Deadpool – who is a mutant like the X-Men – is connected to it. The character is also known for breaking the fourth wall by engaging audiences and having a loose take on continuity.

The events of the Fox X-Men films created multiple timelines as characters time traveled. And the MCU has been dabbling in the multiverse lately, so it’s possible that the Wolverine we meet in Deadpool is from a different reality than the one in Logan, or is plucked from an earlier point in the timeline.

If you’re looking for new mutant adventures before 2024, he’ll be part of the Disney Plus series X-Men ’97 roster. It will continue the storyline of the ’90s animated series when it hits the streaming service in fall 2023, with voice actor Cal Dodd returning as Wolverine.
