JBL, a major player in Nomadic Audio, upped its game a few months ago to offer modest budgets a pair of the latest true wireless headphones: the Tune 230NC TWS. A model that combines endurance, isolation and solid performance.
Despite their ergonomic qualities, the JBL Tune 230NC TWS aren’t far from correct for the unbalanced and, to say the least, tempting sound signature they offer out of the box. The equalizer present in the application saves the day and allows you to benefit from a sound experience that still has some flaws but is much more pleasant, natural and generally satisfactory. JBL headphones position themselves as very honest true wireless headphones that still have to face tough competition and are sometimes much more interesting in terms of quality/price.
strong points
- Rich sound reproduction, well balanced and fairly well defined after equalization.
- Pleasant and relatively complete user experience, well-designed companion app.
- Very solid autonomy (8 to 10 hours per charge).
- Comfortable wearing comfort.
- Pretty natural way to hear surrounding sounds.
weak points
- Treble lacking precision with a slightly sparkling sound.
- Slightly soft bass.
- Shy active noise cancellation.
- Headphones that tend to slip.
NB: The reported price drop is calculated by comparing the lowest price of the day with the average of the lowest prices requested by all retailers for the product in the last month, with security rules to exclude prices from stores whose VAT policy is not clear (known as “grey” shops, typically with imports from China).
alternative
The undisputed king of the high-end sector, Sony gives birth to a much more modest model than the excellent WF-1000XM4, but one that knows how to impress with its comfort and more than generous autonomy. The WF-C500 can also offer an honest sound experience thanks to a warm signature, which, however, is clouded by far too restrained highs. So in the sub-$100 true wireless segment, the WF-C500 pretty much has it all, but the competition is likely to be stiff considering there are plenty of equivalent models out there, and they sometimes offer active noise-cancelling that they lack .
