Tour de Swiss cyclist Gino Mader has died aged 26 after falling into a ravine in a high-speed crash

Swiss cyclist Gino Mader has died at the age of 26 after an accident during the fifth stage of the Tour de Suisse.
The cyclist was involved in a high-speed collision with American Magnus Sheffield while descending the Albula Pass in the Swiss Alps on Thursday.
The Team Bahrain Victorious rider fell into a ravine and was revived on the spot before being flown to a hospital in Chur.
Sadly, Mader passed away on Friday morning after doctors worked overnight to save his life.
In a statement, Bahrain Victorious said: “It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we must announce the death of Gino Mäder.” On Friday June 16, Gino lost his fight after a very serious accident during the fifth stage of the Tour de Suisse to recover from the serious injuries he had sustained.

The team’s managing director, Milan Erzen, said: “Not only was he an extremely talented cyclist, but he was also a great person off the bike.”
“Bahrain Victorious will race in his honor and keep his memory alive on every road we travel.”
“We are committed to showing the spirit and passion that Gino has shown and he will always remain an integral part of our team.”
The Tour de Suisse also issued a statement on Twitter, saying she was “heartbroken” at the news, saying: “Gino, you were an excellent rider but even more so a wonderful human being.” Rest in peace. Our thoughts are with Gino’s family.’
Mader started his professional career with Team Dimension Data in 2019 before joining Bahrain Victorious in 2021.

Both the Tour de Suisse and the UCI paid tribute to the Bahrain Victorious rider on Twitter
He got his first professional stage win at the Giro d’Italia in 2021 in stage six, before winning stage eight of the Tour de Suisse in the same year.
In 2022 he finished second overall in the Tour de Romandie and finished fifth in the 2023 Paris-Nice race in March.
The umbrella organization of cycling, the UCI, also wrote on Twitter: “The UCI is devastated when it learns of the death of professional cyclist Gino Mäder.”
