Matthew Perry was lonely and longing for a wife and family when he died after feeling “sad and depressed” following a series of failed relationships, sources told .
He never married and ended his engagement to Molly Hurwitz, a talent manager, in 2021. He also dated several well-known actresses throughout his life, including Julia Roberts and Lizzy Caplan.
Perry was also confused that most of his “Friends” co-stars also appeared to have eluded lasting love, the sources said.
“Lately the star has been looking for love again.” But after a series of failed relationships, he felt sad and depressed and as if he would never find the love he longed for.
“Matthew dated dozens of women. But in the end, he always felt like they were only interested in his money and fame. And he was extremely generous.
“He showered women with gifts just to get them to pack up their goodies and walk away.”
“Ultimately, I believe his years of battling demons… drugs and alcohol… took a toll on him and his health, and he would end up alone again.”
The “father” of Perry’s Friends reacts to his death
Kathleen Turner, who played Chandler’s transgender father Helena Handbasket, has reacted to the star’s death.
“It’s extremely sad considering how young.” [he was] and it’s a shame he couldn’t get more control,” she told PEOPLE. “I can’t imagine that the pressure these boys lived under is a worldwide phenomenon. “It must have been overwhelming.”
The actress said that she still receives recognition for her time on the hit series.
“I’m still constantly recognized by a certain age group Chandler“It’s daddy,” she shared, noting how close the show’s cast has become.
She added: “I have to emphasize that these children were a tight-knit group. “I was in and out of his life more.
“They were all a clique. They were a very close-knit group.”
At the beginning of each Friends season on Max, a tribute to Matthew Perry was added
Max added a card honoring Perry, who played Chandler from 1994 to 2004, at the start of each of the show’s ten seasons.
“In memory of Matthew Perry 1969-2023,” the card reads, Variety reports.
Perry won a prime-time Emmy for his role as Chandler and earned the affection of millions of fans worldwide.
His comrades have not yet commented publicly on his tragic death at the age of 54.
The “Fools Rush In” producer remembers Matthew Perry
Doug Draizin, who directed the 1997 film starring Perry and Salma Hayek, has reacted to the Friends star’s death.
The director shared that she was at a soccer game with his son when he heard the tragic news.
“We’re at the football game and my son looks at me and says, ‘Matt Perry just died,'” Draizin told the New York Post. “The irony of it is [that] My son is the reason we made “Fools Rush In.” It was about his birth. That’s why this film came about organically.”
The film, which was Perry’s first big screen role, stars him as a fictionalized version of Draizin. The film tells Draizin’s true story with his ex-wife, played by Hayek.
Draizin added: “His father, John Bennett Perry, was also in the film.” [playing Perry’s father] and I remember them having this reunion on set and spending this time together.
“Matt went through a very difficult divorce, so having his dad there and working together made him really proud… I know that made him really proud.”
“I have this beautiful poster of Matt and Salma Hayek and now when I look at it I feel sadness instead of elation…The child I’m staring at is dead.”

Matthew Perry’s regular pickleball partner has told how he felt “tired” on the day of his death and abandoned his match to go home. Hours later he was found dead in his pool in Malibu.
In tribute to his friend, Billy Bush wrote: “His legacy: a hero to his fellow sufferers.” I think he won his battle with addiction, but it was a Pyrrhic victory. It took everything from him.
“For all of us, he’s the guy you wanted to be friends with, and for women…the perfect boyfriend.” “Everyone had a crush on Chandler Bing.”
He went to explain his final moves and recounted how Perry played pickleball every day – sometimes twice.
“I spoke to the woman he played with this morning and every morning.” She’s in shock, idolized Matt… she said he was tired today and for the last week. A little more than usual. “He played for an hour and then went home.”
Emergency crews were called to his Malibu property around 4 p.m.
Bush added: “I am grateful to have known him and to have admired his courage under the clutches of a relentless illness.”
British comedian David Baddiel pays tribute to Perry
Speaking on Radio 4’s Today, British comedian David Baddiel paid tribute to the Friends star.
He said: “It’s pretty rare that you see someone on a sitcom who has a very distinct comedic performance.”
“All of these actors were brilliant at landing jokes, but Matthew Perry had a way of twisting lines so that he landed with different emphasis.”
“It’s a very clever way of playing with the language I normally associate with great stand-ups.”

The show’s creators, Marta Kauffman and David Crane, have also shared their tributes. Executive producer Kevin Bright said Perry’s death “still seems impossible.”

The director of Matthew Perry’s “autobiographical” play The End Of Longing says the actor “honed his craft” on Friends.
Lindsay Posner said the series Perry wrote and starred in was “an autobiographical piece about addiction.”
“He said to me that he would like to be remembered for helping people through the play … and helping them recover.”
In his tribute to Perry on BBC R4, he said: “He was always very, very warm and generous and keen to entertain everyone all the time.”
“He was very keen to be seen as a serious actor, as a comedian.”
“I was a little worried because he had never performed as a stage actor before… but he had honed his craft for years with Friends in front of a live audience and it really showed.”
