According to a statement from the Los Angeles County coroner carried by multiple media outlets on Sunday, conclusions about the actor’s death will not be announced immediately because the investigation must be “delayed.” This usually means that the cause of death could not be determined at autopsy and further investigation is required.
The “Friends” star was found dead in the hot tub of his Los Angeles home at age 54, police said. No drugs were found at the scene and no crime is suspected. A spokesman for the coroner’s office confirmed an autopsy was performed, but the results are pending a toxicology report. The coroner pointed to “other significant circumstances” leading to Matthew Perry’s death that were not publicly disclosed.
Although the initial report indicated that his remains were ready for return, the case remained open. The Los Angeles Fire Department also shared details about Matthew Perry’s death in a statement to People.
“An adult male patient died before first responders arrived,” a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman said. The patient was found by a third party who had repositioned the victim so that his head was no longer in the water [du jacuzzi]. Firefighters removed the victim from the hot tub, performed a rapid medical examination and determined he was deceased.”
