Debate in Angola on parliamentary measures for peace

After a day earlier that saw the official opening of the event, several closed meetings and the Women’s Forum, the participants of the IPU meeting this Tuesday will begin to address the fundamental theme that brought them to Luanda.

In addition, the agenda includes the holding of the Young Parliamentarians’ Forum and the analysis of the draft resolution in the Permanent Commission on Democracy and Human Rights: The role of parliaments in the fight against child trafficking in orphanages.

At another time, the Permanent Commission on Peace and International Security will host two panels; the first dedicated to instruments for dialogue, legislation, monitoring and the implementation of preventive measures for peace.

The second part will focus on the role of parliaments in promoting a culture of transparency, fighting corruption and citizen participation, and restoring trust in national and international institutions.

A workshop on the rights of the child will also be held during the Assembly Steering Committee; the High-Level Advisory Group on Countering Terrorism and Violent Extremism; and the Committee responsible for promoting respect for international humanitarian law will meet behind closed doors.

The Parliamentarians’ Science and Technology Working Group and Human Rights Committee will do the same.

The day before, Angolan President João Lourenço said that his country welcomed the celebration of the 147th IPU Assembly as an honor and privilege.

Meanwhile, welcoming the more than 1,300 participants of the event, the President of the National Assembly (Parliament), Carolina Cerqueira, reiterated that peace is the only way forward in a global context of wars with harmful effects and the weakening of democratic institutions and the judiciary.

In times of crisis, the wise build bridges of friendship, solidarity, cohesion and inclusion to confront the walls of hatred, intolerance and selfishness, he said, emphasizing that solidarity has never been more necessary.
