Dementia at 19: Her mother thought she had had Covid for a long time

A 19-year-old English girl who thought she suffered from brain fog after her memory and school grades plummeted is said to have instead become apathetic after being diagnosed with dementia.

“She never laughs again. She doesn’t get up. No matter what you ask her, no matter what time of day or night, she simply says “I don’t remember”. The saddest part is that she doesn’t mind. There are no emotions. none. She’s 100% apathetic,” her mother, Rebecca Robertson, said, according to The Mirror on Friday.

The 50-year-old said she was stunned to learn of her then-19-year-old daughter Gianna Cabo’s diagnosis of dementia in November 2022.

The latter had previously been severely affected by COVID-19 infection, leading her mother to believe that she was suffering from brain fog due to the long Covid illness.

However, upon physical examination, doctors found that there was no electrical activity in his right central lobe.

The grades of the young woman, who was first in her class, would fall sharply until she was among the bottom. At the same time, her memory had begun to deteriorate to the point where she was unable to perform certain simple everyday tasks, such as using a can opener, the English media continued.

Her mother wanted to share her story to help raise awareness of the disease, which usually affects older people, as part of the UK’s Dementia Action Week.

“Every day I see her disappear a little more. I’m trying not to get hurt because I want to focus on improving them but I’m so scared. I can’t abandon my child. Hopefully we can find a new doctor who can help,” she continued, according to The Mirror.
