Democrat Raphael Warnock Wins Georgia Senate Runoff

ATLANTA – Democrat Raphael Warnock won the runoff for the Georgia Senate seat, as several US media outlets predicted late on Wednesday. Warnock was ahead by about 1.6 percentage points when almost all the votes were counted – those still outstanding were identified mainly in the deeply liberal voters of the capital Atlanta. Warnock was assumed to end up being about two to three percentage points ahead of his archconservative opponent Herschel Walker, who had supported former President Donald Trump. Walker gave a complicated speech after the decision, in which he repeatedly invoked God and thanked his followers. Without naming Warnock or congratulating him, he called for “faith in our elected officials”, which the media interpreted as an admission of defeat.
