Democratic presidential candidate Robert Kennedy Jr. has accused Joe Biden of ruling over an “open border” with Mexico and allowing thousands of migrants to illegally break into the United States
The 69-year-old described the situation as “unsustainable” and claimed asylum seekers were allowed to move about freely shortly after they secretly crossed the border.
Taking to social media, RFK Jr. said illegal immigrants are flocking to the United States because of “a global understanding that we now have an open border.”
“People are drawn here,” said the Kennedy offspring. “It’s not good for our country.”
RFK criticized the Biden administration’s handling of the Title 42 refugee crisis
The nephew of assassinated former President John F. Kennedy also attacked US border officials, suggesting they were too lax in dealing with new illegals.
“After four or five days (of processing) they are released into our country to explore on their own and most of them are never seen or heard from again,” he claimed.
In an interview, Kennedy said his visit to Yuma, Arizona, brought to light “a dystopian nightmare.”
The latest data from US Customs and Border Protection shows at least 211,401 migrants entered the US illegally in April.
According to the same source, that number is up 10 percent from 191,956 such encounters in March 2023.
The surge may have been caused by migrants trying to circumvent the lifting of a Donald Trump-era Covid dictate that made it easier to force them out of the country.
The Biden administration has repeatedly refused to extend the emergency law known as Title 42, which expired at the end of April.
CBP’s latest monthly update for the month of May is expected to be released in the next ten days.
But in a Senate hearing on Tuesday, Benjamine Huffman, the CBP’s acting deputy commissioner, said, “In the days leading up to the repeal of Title 42, CBP encounters eventually hit historic highs, about 10,000 a day.”
“In the weeks since, the numbers are down about 70 percent,” Huffman added.
Authorities will now rely more heavily on immigration law under Title 8 of the US Code.
The law regulates deportation processes and provides for severe penalties, including five- and ten-year re-entry bans for deportees.
Kennedy, who is pro-choice, has tried to woo some right-wing voters by promising to close the border if he becomes president.
He is unlikely to win the Democratic nomination as party apparatchiks rally around Joe Biden in an attempt to thwart a real primary.
He has presented himself as the only viable left-of-center alternative to the aging and faux-pas-prone commander-in-chief.
Since his campaign launch in Boston in April, Robert F. Kennedy has sought to capitalize on Democratic voters’ dissatisfaction at the lack of an alternative to an increasingly fragile Joe Biden
Biden fell at an event in Colorado earlier this month, sparking new concerns about his health
Biden would be 86 at the end of his second term if he won next year’s presidential election.
Questions about his suitability for the post were raised again after he fell June 1 at an Air Force Academy graduation in Colorado.
Biden loyalists have long dismissed discussions about the president’s health as baseless slander concocted by conservatives.
But it seems those concerns are shared by Democratic voters as well.
According to a poll by left-leaning news channel CNN released two weeks ago, 60% of Democrats back Biden for the top Democratic spot next year.
But a sizable 20% supports Kennedy, a former environmental attorney who has a history of promoting conspiracy theories about the safety of FDA-approved vaccines.
Worryingly for the Biden campaign, only 33 percent believe his victory would be a step forward for the country.
