Hundreds of citizens protested in the central streets of Lima this Saturday, with a concentration point in Plaza San Martín. They reject the verdict that favors Alberto Fujimori and grants him freedom.
Dozens of youth groups and others, holding banners and slogans alluding to the former president’s government, called for the repeal of the pardon, which was upheld by the constitutional court in a controversial decision announced last Thursday.
The fact that polarized the country again has been the subject of multiple interpretations: from a pact between Fujimorism and the government to a political move by the Constitutional Court. The President of the TC, who decided the verdict by tie, was criticized for not withdrawing from the case. The reason is that he himself admitted to meeting with Keiko Fujimori prior to his appointment.
For its part, Pedro Castillo’s government has announced that it will appeal to the InterAmerican Commission on Human Rights to challenge the verdict. This same body ordered the repeal of the pardon when it was ordered by former President Pedro Pablo Kuszinsky in December 2017. Despite the fact that the Supreme Court has ordered the irregularities clemency to be overturned, a habeas corpus complaint brought to the TC today restores the validity of that decision and Alberto Fujimori may be released in the coming days.
There were also demonstrations against it in other cities in the country. Hundreds of citizens from Arequipa also joined the protests. They marched through the city’s central streets after exiting the concentration point in Plaza España. As usual, the Plaza de Armas, historical scene of the civil demonstrations, was the end point of the march.
