He finally slams the door on his political career. “I am leaving Danish politics completely and permanently today,” Danish Deputy Prime Minister Jakob Ellemann-Jensen announced on Monday, a few months after he returned to office following a six-month sick leave due to overwork.
The resignation also means he is leaving his position as leader of the liberal Venstre party, which is part of Denmark’s governing coalition. Since entering a coalition government led by Social Democrat Mette Frederiksen, the party has seen its popularity plummet in polls.
Seems too bright
The former minister felt that his personality attracted too much attention and overshadowed the policies pursued by his party within the government. This has become an obstacle to the party’s ability to “move forward”, he said. “Consequently, I draw the conclusions and withdraw,” added the party leader, who has been a parliamentarian since 2011.
At the beginning of August, Jakob Ellemann-Jensen returned to his duties after a six-month sick leave due to overwork at work. The defense minister, also a member of the Venstre party, Troels Lund Poulsen, will take over the government.
