(ANSA) WASHINGTON, 02 APR There’s a storm on New York Mayor Eric Adams compared to former Republican Mayor Rudy Giuliani because, after chasing the homeless off the subway, he’s now the police unleashed to evacuate them He lives on the streets in tents or shelters. Some community leaders and human rights defenders argue that there are no safe places for the homeless. Many of them avoid emergency shelters, preferring to sleep under bridges, on sidewalks, or, until recently, in subways and transportation hubs.
“People have a right to worry and we have a responsibility to act on their fears, we have to do it in a way that doesn’t bring back the Giuliani era when all the troubles from the arrests of African Americans and the criminalization of poverty were resolved. he accused Councilwoman Diana Ayala, a Bronx Democrat whose brother suffered from mental health problems and homelessness, in the New York Times. His reference dates back to over 20 years ago, when thenMayor Giuliani used police to arrest anyone who refused to go to an emergency shelter, stating that the homeless had no right to sleep on the sidewalk. Adams didn’t go that far: “We’re not chasing people off the sidewalks, they have the right to sleep on the street, but not the right to build miniature houses,” explained the mayor, a former police captain who billed himself as “the new Face of the Democratic Party”. So, citing the City Health Act, he declared war on the makeshift shelters, using funds to clear the camps.
250 have been cleared so far, but Adams is launching a second round of checks. “I don’t let anyone down, but I don’t think there’s dignity in living in a box, with no shower, no toilet, it’s just inhuman,” he remarked. The problem, according to its critics, is that it offers no alternatives and does nothing but ignore what is a real social emergency. (HAND).
