Deputies want to change the rules to appoint Volodymyr Zelensky

European politicians have asked the Nobel Peace Prize committee to change the rules so they can nominate Volodymyr Zelensky and the Ukrainian people.

An exception that would be historical. Over the weekend, a group of MEPs sent a letter to the Nobel Peace Prize committee with a request to change the rules for nominating Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Indeed, as EURACTIV explained on Friday, nominations for the award have been closed since the end of February. The committee must now oversee the candidates before declaring the winner next October. According to the organization, 251 people and 92 organizations have applied for 2022.

No case law

“We believe the time has come to show the people of Ukraine that we are on their side. Therefore, we humbly ask you, the committee, to consider expanding and resuming the nomination process for the Nobel Peace Prize until March 31, 2022, in order to allow the candidacies of President Zelensky and people of Ukraine,” reads a letter released by EURACTIV.

However, the media clarify that there is no historical case law regarding the extension of the term of appointment. Among the signatories of the letter, in particular, former Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstad or former Estonian Prime Minister Andrus Ansip.
