The Department of Corrections confirmed that an inmate was attacked Friday at Tucson Correctional Center, Arizona, without confirming his identity.

According to several American media outlets, including the New York Times (NYT) and the Associated Press, Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer sentenced to more than twenty years in prison for the murder of George Floyd, was seriously stabbed by another arrestee on Friday, November 24th, injured in a prison in Arizona in the southwestern United States. Derek Chauvin “was stabbed to death at a federal prison in Tucson, Arizona, on Friday, according to two people familiar with the matter,” writes the American daily.

The correctional facility confirmed that an inmate was attacked around 12:30 p.m. Friday. According to her, the prisoner, who she did not name, was taken to the hospital after receiving first aid from staff at the scene. She did not provide any further information about her health. In her press release she stated that the FBI, the federal police, was informed about the incident. American federal prison authorities sent a statement to AFP confirming an “attack” without naming the victim.

An appeal was rejected last week

The murder of George Floyd and images of his slow agony under Derek Chauvin’s knee sparked racial unrest across the United States, giving rise to the Black Lives Matter movement. On May 25, 2020, the white police officer, a veteran police officer from Minneapolis (North), remained kneeling on the black forty-year-old’s neck for almost ten minutes, indifferent to the interventions of shocked passers-by and the moans of his victim. Two other police officers helped restrain him.

The scene, filmed and posted online, sparked major protests against racism and police violence across the United States and beyond. Derek Chauvin was convicted of murder by Minnesota state courts after a closely watched trial in 2021 and sentenced to 22.5 years in prison. The United States Supreme Court last week rejected Derek Chauvin’s appeal of that conviction. Derek Chauvin also pleaded guilty before a federal judge to “violating the civil rights” of George Floyd and received another sentence in 2022, namely 21 years in prison.
