Derico, a member of the “Sexteto”, weeps and mourns the death of Jô Soares: “He was a kind of father. Taught me everything’

“It’s very sad. I spent 28 years there, half my life I worked with Jô. I’m 56 years old and I’ve worked with him for 28 years, he’s an amazing person, he was a kind of father himself. I had wonderful times with him, he taught me everything,” Sciotti told TV Globo’s Bom Dia SP. (see video above).

“I started working with him at the age of 22 and left when I was 50. I’ve spent my whole life listening to him. I sat in that chair and watched the history of Brazil and the world roll by. His affection and generosity are unforgettable. Although the program is “Programa do Jô,” he said he didn’t do it alone. It has always opened the door for us to develop our skills,” he explained.

In addition to Derico, the socalled Jô house band was formed by the musicians Chiquinho Oliveira (trumpet), Miltinho (drummer), Bira (bass), Tomati (guitar), Osmar Barutti (piano).

The group first formed as a quartet, then became a quintet, eventually forming a sextet on the TV Globo program.

As the group’s funny and balding sax player, Derico played several characters in the show’s humorous skits and has enjoyed success as Gordo’s “random troubles consultant” since the show “Jô Soares 11 ea helped” on SBT.

The nickname came about almost by accident, according to Derico, when Jô read an article about a twoheaded turtle found in South America at the beginning of the show.

“I played the flute and was the only one who had a microphone in front of it. He read the news and he asked me, ‘Derico, why do you think they found a twoheaded turtle?’ I saw that it was my chance and I said “I’ll drop the verb here”. And I explained that she came from Antarctica to spawn towards the tropics. And when she arrived in southern South America, she didn’t know if she would [Oceano] Pacific or Atlantic,” he remembers with a laugh.

“Then he said to me, ‘Look, man. You don’t have to say anything else all month,'” he said.

“I had a father that I have loved my whole life. But Jô was a different person. As a professional and tutor, he has helped me in ways that I cannot express the gratitude for what he has done for me,” he explained.

From the members of ‘Sexteto’, Rubinho on guitar died while the show was still on the air, as well as Bira on bass, who died in 2019 after the show ended on TV Globo.

“If our colleague Bira had not died in 2019, he would have died today. Because he loved Jô and the entire production of the show. It was an amazing friendship relationship. We recorded on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. But Bira went there every day, wearing a suit. I read the newspaper the whole time and talked to everyone in production,” Derico recalls of his colleagues from Sexteto.
