Pastor Lívio (Breno da Matta) caught the public's attention not only because of the “poisoned motorcycle” in episode (16) of Renascer on Friday. The religious man also left viewers speechless with the weapon he used to take out a gang of thugs on Globo's nine o'clock soap opera a cell phone without a battery.
Bruno Luperi transformed the priest of the original version into a pastor with an eye on one of the fastest growing groups among Brazilians, according to the latest IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) census: the evangelicals.
Throughout the plot, Lívio will maintain a friendly relationship with Father Santo (Chico Diaz), to whom he offered a ride in order to arrive in time for the wedding of José Inocêncio (Marcos Palmeira) and Mariana (Theresa Fonseca). Finally, the priest's Jeep abandoned him on the day he needed it most.
However, the priest stopped halfway to help a group of people who were victims of illegal expropriation. He was even put at gunpoint to help them, but was saved by Breno da Matta's character.
Lívio took a cell phone out of his pocket to film the gunmen. “As if the illegal eviction wasn’t enough, these thugs are threatening to shoot a priest. And don’t even try anything as this will be broadcast live,” he announced.
“And you call the police at home. Do you want to take advantage of the audience? Now is the time to shoot,” added the priest, who managed to rout the bandits. “The pastor is doing live!” was surprised by a profile identified as Luah on X (formerly Twitter).
“What a scene,” praised Gabriel Monteiro. “The guy’s gun is sharp,” Fernanda Silva added. “A cell phone versus a gun! I thought it was chic,” Kristal continued. “My God, the priest lives against expropriation,” remarked Mari.
Renascer was written and created by author Benedito Ruy Barbosa. The first version was broadcast on Globo in 1993. Bruno Luperi is the writer's grandson and is responsible for the adaptation of the rural saga, which premiered in prime time in January. The remake will air until September.
