The AfD continues to climb in the polls: with 19 percent, in line with the ARD Germany trend, it is moving the SPD into third place. Most respondents think it’s a good thing when parties come together to stop AfD candidates.

If there were federal elections next Sunday, the Union would clearly be the strongest faction, according to the results of the current DeutschlandTrends poll for the ARD morning show. She could hold her result from three weeks ago at 29 percent. The AfD improved again and, at 19 percent, would reach the highest value ever determined for this party in the ARD Germany trend (+1 vs. June 1, 2023).

The SPD would be pushed into third place by the AfD and would receive 17 percent of the vote (-1). Bündnis 90/Die Grünen would again reach 15 percent, for the FDP would fall again to six percent (-1) after recently improved approval ratings. Four percent of voters would still vote for the Left Party – that would not be enough for a seat in the Bundestag.

Majority for merger against AfD candidates

To prevent AfD candidates in the runoff elections for mayor or district offices, the other parties have recently met more frequently and issued a recommendation for the opposing candidates. Approximately a second citizen (52 percent) considers this procedure correct. More than a third of respondents (35 percent) in the current DeutschlandTrend for the ARD morning magazine thought this was wrong. 13% do not want or cannot express themselves.

The coalition against the election of AfD candidates is supported by supporters of all parties with the exception of the AfD. In the new federal states, however, the number of critical voices against solidarity against AfD candidates is 40% higher than in the old federal states. 47% think this approach is correct.

Nationwide, there is even a slight increase among 35-49 year olds of 45-44% for those who view parties’ cooperation critically against AfD candidates. Those over 65 have the highest approval for this stage (58 to 31 percent).

Results are rounded to whole percentages to avoid false expectations of accuracy. Because for all representative surveys, fluctuation ranges must be taken into account. In the case of a survey with 1,000 respondents, these add up to around three percentage points for large parties and around one point for smaller parties. Furthermore, the rounding error is significant for small parties. For these reasons, no party below three percent is shown in Sunday’s question.
