The 75th Annual Directors Guild Awards were presented at the Beverly Hilton and the night’s big honor brought a bit of a surprise as Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, directors of Everything Everywhere All at Once, beat Steven Spielberg for the grand prize.
DGA is historically a strong predictor of Oscar success, missing out on eventual Best Director winner just eight times in 74 years. Last year, the Guild presented Jane Campion with its highest film award for The Power of the Dog, which marked a big step on her way to winning Best Director at the Oscars.
After two consecutive years of honoring female directors (Jane Campion and Chloé Zhao) with the top honors and watching them earn their corresponding Oscars, the Directors’ Guild of America nominated a number of men this year. Despite the strong work of Sarah Polley on Women Talking and Gina Prince-Bythewood on her epic The Woman King — not to mention Chinonye Chukwu and Maria Schrader’s names for the likes of Till and She Said — none of them made the list.
Some other eyebrow-raising omissions were James Cameron for Avatar: The Way of Water and Elvis helmet Baz Luhrmann. Both created very popular films and were nominated for Globe and Critics Choice.
While women were excluded from the marquee race, the DGA nominated four for its first feature film award: Alice Diop (Saint Omer), Audrey Diwan (Happening), Antoneta Alamat Kusijanovic (Murina) and Charlotte Wells (Aftersun). John Patton Ford was also nominated for Emily the Criminal. Wells won for her lively film.
Last year’s Dramatic Series winner, Succession, did not air any episodes in 2022 and was therefore ineligible to enter, and defending comedy series champion, Hacks, did not make this year’s list. Saturday Night Live, whose Don Roy King won last year’s DGA Award, was back in the running for Variety/Talk/News/Sports – Regularly Scheduled Programming; and this time Liz Patrick won.
In the comedy series category, Bill Hader was recognized for his work on Barry.
