Diarrheal disease and corona clusters in asylum accommodation – world

In addition to a corona cluster, a diarrheal disease also broke out in a Swiss nursing home.

The outbreak of diarrheal disease and Covid-19 infections was detected at the Mingerstraße civil defense facility, the initial reception center at the Bernese Allmend for refugees from Ukraine. According to the current state of knowledge, seven (diarrhea) and ten (Covid) people are affected.

“As both infections are very contagious diseases, it cannot be ruled out that other people have been infected,” said Gundekar Giebel of the Bern health department on Sunday for 20 minutes.

16 people at risk affected

The cantonal medical service carried out a triage on Saturday and identified 16 people at risk, in whom a serious course of the disease cannot be ruled out, and took them to other accommodation. However, it was clearly communicated to the population that the transfer was voluntary and that no family would be separated, emphasizes Giebel: “The measure was very well accepted and the people were grateful”.

Sometimes up to 400 people are housed in the Mingerstraße civil protection unit for an average of two to four days before the final housing allocation. Infections spread most quickly where many people live and sleep together and share toilet facilities. Residents are aware of this problem from the very beginning of hosting, says Giebel. Strict hygiene and compliance with recommended Covid-19 protection measures are very important. The premises are also cleaned frequently.
