Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel commemorated Wednesday’s victory over the Venezuelan people’s coup d’état 20 years ago, which brought revolutionary leader Hugo Chávez (1954-2013) back to power.

On his social network Twitter account, the President described the historic event as “memorable and heroic” and confirmed that his country is celebrating it alongside the South American nation.

He also stressed that the coup attempted to plunge Venezuela into a shameful past. The commemoration of the events is celebrated by the Venezuelan government, political organizations and social movements related to the Bolivarian Revolution.

Among the activities carried out, a day of communication and propaganda in the streets, networks and media and a parade organized by the Bolivarian National Militia on the 12th and 13th respectively stand out.

On April 11, the day of the coup, a national mobilization took place “representing the strength of the people in defense of political power, of the fatherland, in defense of its leader Hugo Chávez,” according to the vice-president of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela, Pedro Infante.

Twenty years ago, the leadership of the Fedecamara business association and the private media, along with sections of the opposition and the church hierarchy, conspired to overthrow the president and make Pedro Carmona de facto president, whose government lasted only 47 hours.

The popular uprising in the streets and the rescue of Hugo Chávez on April 13 by soldiers loyal to the constitution dealt the final blow to the coup.
