Dictatorship: Ortega bans entry of the director of Miss Nicaragua Revista Oeste

The President of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, on Thursday the 23rd banned the director of the Miss Nicaragua pageant, Karen Celebertti, from entering the country. She returned from Mexico with her daughter after the Nicaraguan Sheynnis Palacios Cornejo was ordained Miss Universe 2023.

Karen, who was first runnerup at Miss Nicaragua in 1991 and has been head of the franchise since 2001, arrived at Augusto C. Sandino International Airport but was refused entry by immigration authorities. After waiting for hours, she and her daughter had to return to Mexico, according to information from the CSI platform “Mosaico”.

Karen has been in San Salvador since November 3rd, accompanying Sheynnis, who was crowned the most beautiful woman in the universe on November 18th. After the competition, the director accompanied her to engagements in Miami and Mexico, marking the first victory by a Nicaraguan woman in the universal competition.

According to Mosaico CSI, Karen’s husband, son and mother returned to Nicaragua on November 19 without any immigration issues.

The director of Miss Nicaragua had already been arrested on March 16, 2019, along with dozens of critics and opponents of the Ortega government during the national sociopolitical crisis. At that time they demanded the release of political prisoners in Managua.

Ortega’s government and the Miss Nicaragua franchise had no comment on the ban on entry into the country.

Impact of Sheynnis’ victory in Nicaragua

The Nicaraguan government praised the victory in the competition and emphasized that “Nicaragua celebrates with its queen.” Two days later, Vice President Rosario Murillo criticized those who praised Sheynnis’ victory, saying they were trying to “turn a beautiful and deserved moment of pride into a destructive coup.”

This week, the country’s authorities banned two artists from honoring Miss Universe with a mural.

The new Miss Universe 2023, Sheynnis Palacios Cornejo, has a degree in social communication from the Central American Jesuit University of Managua. She will now be living in New York for a year to accommodate commitments and schedules.
