analysis

Another story circulating online quoted former President Lula during the G20 meeting in India. After fake news reports that he was ignored during the leaders’ meeting, a video denounced a “crime by Lula.”

According to reports going viral on the internet, Lula allegedly stole “pencils” from the G20 meeting. The evidence would be a video from the end of a meeting in which he takes two “pencils” from the table where he was speaking and hands them to Janja. Read some of the news shared online, watch the video and read the transcript:

Version 1: This president is a kleptomaniac. Lula even stole pens…you see. Version 2: The thief Lula even steals a pen 🖊, imagine money there and that the blatant theft of really disgusting things has now found an accomplice of his level. God, asshole, this is normal for him

Video: Message that speaks of a Pix fraud in a phone call about vaccination is fake

Video: Don’t be fooled, denies fake about Nan soy milk in HU and cell phone and microwave explosion (we tested it)

Version 3: Lula steals and Bolsonaro is the one who gets a reputation as a thief. Even pens are carried by this pest. Version 4: Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva steals goldplated pens at the G20 meeting in India. and is captured on camera.

Transcript: A criminal never misses an opportunity. Every opportunity is a win for him. Now, at this very moment, he goes to pick up some pens that are on the table. He looks to the side in fear to see if no one is watching and realizes in slow motion that they are pens and he pretends to be the Good Samaritan brain of a charitable person. Wisher and greets some people, but he is focused on the pens.

He wants to take these pens home with him and they make their way to his partner who is waiting nearby. At exactly that moment he gives his partner the pens and she puts them in her pocket. And she tries to deceive someone nearby so that they don’t realize that she committed the theft. Watch in slow motion. Delivered, put in the bag. Amazing, right? You just witnessed a theft by an exconvict who stole billions from Brazil and a pen theft in India

In the test part we answer the following questions. 1) Does the video prove that Lula and Janja stole pens in India? 2) In what context was the video recorded with the message accusing Lula and Janja of pen theft? 3) Are the allegations made against Lula in the video real?

Does the video prove that Lula and Janja stole pens in India?

Don’t prove it. Although Lula actually picks up the items in the pictures and hands them to Janja, it is not possible to accuse him of “theft.” What’s more, the context of the image suggests the opposite.

In what context was the video recorded with the message accusing Lula and Janja of pen theft?

The video was recorded at the G20 final meeting in India. If you watch the full video (published on Canal Gov’s YouTube channel), you can see that the items taken by Lula were on his desk during the meeting.

At the end of the meeting, Lula (as well as other people present at the meeting) collected his things (including the items). He handed the papers to an accompanying person. He handed the object to Janja.

Detail: Normally at events like this, pens and pads are shared for meetings. In these cases, we never find out about their return (especially for heads of state).

We have an update: After the controversy spread across the internet, First Lady Janja Lula da Silva posted a picture with the “pencils” seen in the video (one comment: Unlike most public figures chose Look to face the fakery and denial. Commendable attitude). In fact, they’re not even pens. See:

Are the allegations made against Lula in the video real?

In the cold letter of the law: No. There is no way to suggest that he “stole billions” or that he is a “kleptomaniac,” nor does any source indicate that the pens were “gold.” In other words, the video is a bunch of stuff with no evidence.

Unproven rumor 👎

There is no evidence that Lula “stole pens” during the G20 meeting, or even that they had any monetary value. Since the burden of proof lies with the accuser, the story is just an unfounded rumor.
