Former President Dilma Rousseff was officially appointed head of the New Development Bank, also known as “Brics Bank” this Friday (24). Dilma was appointed to this position by the Lula government.

Dilma’s term as President of Brics Bank runs until July 2025. It was up to Brazil to come up with a new name for the bank’s leadership.

Dilma’s name was approved by a committee at the institution after the former president conducted an interview of sorts with the business ministers of the bloc’s other member countries South Africa, China, India and Russia.

Dilma’s predecessor was the Brazilian Marcos Troyjo. He is a diplomat and was nominated by Jair Bolsonaro for the presidency of Brics Bank in 2020.

NDB’s headquarters are located in Shanghai, China. Dilma is scheduled to travel to the country with Lula in the coming days.

The BRICS bank is responsible for financing infrastructure projects and sustainable development projects in the countries that are part of the institution.

Fighting hunger and poverty

In a note, Brics Bank said that as President of Brazil, Dilma prioritized the fight against poverty and highlighted the expansion of social programs created between 2003 and 2010 on Lula’s terms.

“As a result of one of the most intensive poverty reduction processes in the country’s history, Brazil has left the UN hunger map,” reads an excerpt from the NBD communiqué.

In the press release, the institution added that Dilma internationally defended respect for the sovereignty of all countries and defense of socalled multilateralism; of sustainable development; of human rights; and of peace.

“Under their rule [Dilma]Brazil has been present in all international forums dedicated to climate and environmental protection, culminating in a key participation in the Paris Agreement,” he added.

According to the bank, Rousseff has “significantly” expanded cooperation between Brazil and several countries in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and Asia.
