The Gist The defending nation challenged the host country's representative in the round of 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations this Monday, January 29th. The two teams had to decide on penalties (1:1 after extra time).
A duel of (very) strong arms. This is how we could define this tempting Senegal-Côte d'Ivoire this Monday, January 29, in the round of 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations. It was nothing more and nothing less a confrontation between the defending nation and the one representing the organizing country.
- The Senegalese qualified by finishing first in their group (C) in the first phase and showing a flawless performance: 3 games, 3 wins against Gambia, Cameroon and Guinea,
- The Ivorians almost performed a miracle in this CAN. Qualified as one of the best third in the group, they suffered two defeats, including a very heavy one against Equatorial Guinea (4-0) and only one win (Guinea-Bissau). The Elephants' French coach, Jean-Louis Gasset, also had the door slammed during the competition and was replaced by Emerse Faé.
- The Ivorians forced their fate at home on Monday evening: they quickly found themselves 1-0 behind and didn't give up until the second-half equalizer before securing qualification on penalties. They will face Mali or Burkina Faso on Saturday, February 3 at 6 p.m.
