Russia is planning a naval base in the Georgian separatist region
A day after its leader met with Vladimir Putin, Russia signed a deal for a permanent naval base on the Black Sea coast of Georgia’s breakaway region of Abkhazia. “We have signed an agreement and in the near future there will be a permanent base of the Russian Navy in the Ochamchira region,” said Aslan Bjania, self-proclaimed president of Russian-backed Abkhazia. “All this is aimed at increasing the defense capability of Russia and Abkhazia, and this type of interaction will continue,” he said. “There are also things I can’t talk about.”

German company receives order to supply automated reconnaissance systems to Ukraine
The German company Rheinmetall announced that it had received a contract to supply automated reconnaissance systems for Ukraine. The company said the order for Ukraine was paid for by the German government. The SurveilSpire system is designed for reconnaissance and combat against enemy drones.

Zelenskyy in Spain for the European Political Community summit

Russia reportedly lost 280,470 soldiers in Ukraine
According to the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Russia has lost 280,470 soldiers in Ukraine since the start of the war. In addition, Russia lost 4,757 tanks, 9,052 armored fighting vehicles, 8,980 vehicles and fuel tanks, 6,643 artillery systems, 804 multiple rocket systems, 540 air defense systems, 315 aircraft, 316 helicopters, 5,129 drones and 20 ships.

Russian city attacked by cluster munitions
The governor of Russia’s Kursk region, Roman Starovoit, accused the Ukrainian army of firing cluster bombs, a controversial weapon, into the city of Rylsk, injuring a civilian.
“The border town of Rylsk was shelled by Ukraine with cluster munitions,” he wrote. “A woman was injured by shrapnel and was taken to hospital.”

The Ukrainians shot down 24 of 29 Russian drones launched overnight
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the Russians launched Iranian-made drones from southern Crimea. “24 Shahed-131/136 drones were shot down over the Odessa, Mykolaiv and Kirovohrad regions by units of the Ukrainian Air Force in cooperation with the air defense forces,” the army states.

The US is transferring thousands of seized Iranian weapons and ammunition to Ukraine
According to CNN, US Central Command has handed over more than a million rounds of confiscated Iranian ammunition to Ukrainian forces. “The government acquired ownership of this ammunition on July 20, 2023 through civil confiscation requests filed by the Department of Justice against Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC),” explains the American command.
These Iranian weapons were seized by the US Navy while in transit to Yemen “in violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2216.”
These deliveries could help partially alleviate the Ukrainian armed forces’ weapons shortage.

Russia could use sea mines to attack the Black Sea grain corridor
British intelligence says Russian forces may use sea mines to attack civilian shipping targets in the Black Sea. Damage in Ukraine is estimated at $151 billion
According to the Kyiv School of Economics, the recorded direct damage increased by $700 million compared to June 2023. “As of September 1, 2023, the total documented direct damage caused by Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine’s infrastructure was $151.2 billion.”
