An artificial intelligence (AI) calculator developed by Danish researchers is proving shockingly accurate at predicting when a person will die. The model, called “life2vec,” has an accuracy of 78%, according to a study published in the journal Nature Computational Science.
life2vec works like a chatbot and feeds on information about more than six million real people, including data such as income, occupation, location, injuries and pregnancy history. Trained on data from 2008 to 2016, the model can answer simple questions and provide answers about how long the user expects it to survive on Earth.

Based on the research, life2vec was able to correctly predict who had died by 2020 in more than threequarters of cases. Researchers believe the model can predict death so accurately because it can detect patterns and correlations in the data.
“The model opens up important positive and negative perspectives for discussion and political debate,” said Sune Lehmann, professor of networks and alumna of the Technical University of Denmark and lead author of the study. “Similar technologies for predicting life events and human behavior are already being used today in technology companies that, for example, track our behavior on social media, profile us with extreme precision, and use those profiles to predict our behavior and influence us.” This discussion needs people to be part of the democratic discussion so that we can think about where technology is taking us and whether this is a development that we want.”

Some experts believe life2vec can be used to improve public health and prevent disease. For example, the model could be used to identify people at increased risk of premature death and provide them with preventative health services.

However, other experts are concerned about the potential negative effects of life2vec. For example, the model could be used by insurers to deny coverage to people who are at higher risk of premature death.
It is still too early to say how life2vec will be used in the future. However, it is clear that the model has the potential to revolutionize the way we predict and deal with death.
