STORY – The Republican governor threatens to strip the American corporation of its tax benefits after taking a stand against the “Don’t Say Gay” law.
Disney Corporation is caught in the middle of a culture war that is tearing America apart. While the Hollywood giant’s productions, heroes and theme parks aim to embody family values and celebrate the magic of childhood, Bob Chapek, its CEO, feels pressured by his board to quickly find an elegant solution to the conflict between Disney and the Gay and transgender civil rights lobby on one side and elected Republicans on the other.
The case takes an increasingly political turn. Ron DeSantis, the Republican governor of Florida, is threatening to strip Disney of the enormous tax and regulatory privileges the company has in Orlando, home to four of its theme parks, which employ about 80,000 people. At the same time, commentators and pundits from certain American media are calling for Bob Chapek’s resignation.
