The Disney streaming services overtook Netflix for subscriber count. Both platforms will launch subscriptions with ads
The total number of subscribers to Walt Disney’s streaming services is 221.1 million (data for the company’s third quarter, which ended in June) — a historic figure and currency for Disney+since it is the first time that a competitor surpasses Netflix in number of streaming subscriptions.
The Disney numbers include Disney+ (152 million subscribers), ESPN+ (22.8 million), and Hulu total including live TV (46.2 million).
The “low cost” subscriptions
To try to stem another possible drastic drop in subscriptions Netflix recently announced the launch of a low-cost package with advertising. Likewise Walt Disney Company will introduce a subscription formula with advertising on Disney +, Disney + Basic. The new subscription will be available from December 8, 2022initially only in the United States.
Disney +: What changes with the new subscription
“With our new ad-supported offering of Disney+ and an expanded range of plans across our streaming portfolio, we will offer consumers more choice at different price levels to meet the diverse needs of our viewers and appeal to an even broader audience,” it said in a company Note.
At the moment we are talking about an average of 4 minutes of advertising per hour, starting with commercials of 15 and 30 seconds. Disney talks about a cheaper offer with ads, but in reality the price of Disney + Basic (the version with ads) is costs $7.99 a month or the current price of Disney+ without ads. It will then increase to $10.99 per month. Disney+ Premium is $109.99 per year for those who pay 12 months in advance, an increase of $30 per year.
The stages of the Netflix “crisis”
Netflix now has 220.67 million subscribers worldwide after losing nearly 1 million last quarter. After ten years of constant growth, the American streaming company had to accept the first setbacks last April. In the first quarter, 200,000 fewer subscribers and a sharp drop in the stock on Wall Street. To save the decline (partially saved by Stranger Things season 4, which released in May).
