Divorce: He pays $1 billion to his ex-wife who left him for a woman

One of the richest men in the world has had to pay $1 billion (CAD$1.9 billion) to his ex-wife, who left him for another woman after 40 years of marriage.

Caryl, 69, and her ex-husband Israel Englander, a 74-year-old billionaire hedge fund titan, have been married since 1975 and have three children.

Their divorce caused a strong reaction from New York society, according to Page Six.

The divorce settlement came after Caryl sued Israel, which Forbes says is worth US$11.3 billion (CA$15 billion), claiming he “got angry” when she “fell in love” with him, a famous 55-year-old Swiss gallery owner.

The two women also claimed that Israel “terrorized” them both to cheat Caryl out of billions of dollars in divorce by getting her to sign a post-marital agreement in 2020, according to the civil lawsuit filed Feb. 9 .

The lawsuit was mysteriously dropped a week later and the divorce was settled privately and out of court.

Caryl’s attorney, Peter E. Bronstein, confirmed that Caryl was satisfied with the settlement and that the parties were not permitted to respond to requests for comment.

The Englishman’s 40-year marriage began to deteriorate in 2016 after Israel cheated on Caryl on multiple occasions, the two women allege.

Another source also claimed that many believed Caryl’s decision to leave Israel for Levy left him “deeply humbled, a feeling reinforced by the fact that Caryl left him for a woman at this point in her life and became a topic of conversation.” No. 1 in New York became society.
