DIY SOS EastEnders special: Soap stars help Nick Knowles' huge makeover project – as fans were left stunned by some Walford residents: “I have no idea who they are!”

EastEnders stars took part in Nick Knowles' extensive makeover project for the DIY SOS Christmas special on Monday.

Natalie Cassidy (who plays Sonia Fowler) appeared tough alongside Perry Fenwick (Billy Mitchell), Gillian Wright (Jean Slater) and Colin Salmon (George Knight).

In the latest episode, the team helped transform Butterfly Effect Well-Being's Essex center in time for Christmas.

The charity, which helps grieving relatives, was based in a portable hut before a new building gifted to them in poor condition was transformed thanks to the BBC show.

However, many fans were confused about which soap stars were helping out on the project and struggled to pick them out from the crowd.

On X, formerly known as Twitter, one viewer wrote: “Okay Billy Mitchell is great, if there are others I obviously have no idea who they are.”

With a second joke: “Wait a minute, who from EastEnders is helping?” The show's set designers…'

While more eagle-eyed fans gushed: “Nice to see Gillian Wright / Jean Slater.”

And someone else said: “Zaraah Abarahams (who plays Chelsea Fox), good to see you!”

Butterfly Effect Well-Being is a non-profit community project that brings people together and improves mental health.

DIY SOS is calling on the public and local businesses to help transform the homes and buildings of vulnerable families and small businesses across the UK.

The EastEnders team was happy to help with this project, but it is not clear whether the cast have a personal connection to the project.

The DIY SOS: EastEnders special follows the Strictly special, which aired in August.

Nick subsequently teamed up with Anton Du Beke and dancers Katya Jones, Luba Mushtuk, Graziano Di Prima and Nancy Xu.

The Strictly stars swapped the dance floor for a building site to add some sparkle to a performing arts school in Wallsend, North Tyneside.

Nick and the Strictly stars were tasked with transforming an abandoned old men's club into a creative home for True Colors, a charity that welcomes all children and young adults, regardless of their abilities, and provides them with a space to express themselves.

They had just six days to transform the dark and dingy space, which was spread over two levels and featured a graffiti-filled concrete courtyard outside.

Anton enthused that he and his fellow dancers were “thrilled” to be involved in supporting such a great community.

He said: “Myself, Katya and Graziano understand the power of dance and how it brings people together.”

“This could really transform not only the building but the community.” We’re really excited to be able to help you and bring some Strictly magic to the event. And who knows, maybe we'll see a future Strictly star in our midst!'.

Nick added that he hopes the Strictly professionals have been able to “inspire” the Performing Arts School.

He said: “We're back and what a way to open the Big Build with a brilliant group of Strictly stars who will inspire and delight the children, young adults and staff of True Colors.”

“This performing arts school really needs a makeover. They do an excellent job at Wallsend and if we can help them grow so they can take on more pupils then we will do our best.”
