The couple first made the shocking announcement that they would step down from royal duties on January 8, 2020.

At the time, they wrote in a joint statement that they made the decision after “many months of thought and internal discussions.”

They went on to say they “want to work towards becoming financially independent while continuing to give their full support to Her Majesty The Queen”.

The statement continued: “This geographic balance will allow us to raise our son with appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while allowing our family the space to focus on the next chapter, including introduction our new charity legal entity.’

Since then, the issue of their titles has become increasingly pressing as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have continually attacked the royal family – from interviewing Oprah to a Netflix documentary to the release of Harry’s memoir, which he has in a series of interviews.

The 38-year-old Duke addressed the matter himself during his in-depth interview with 60 Minutes, hinting that the couple had no intention of giving up the status as it would make no difference.

Anderson Cooper asked, “Why don’t you relinquish your titles of duke and duchess?”

Prince Harry replied, “And what difference would that make?”

That statement contradicts Harry’s previous claims in his Netflix docuseries, saying he and Meghan told King Charles they would relinquish their royal titles if their departure fails.

During the series, he said the family knew they wanted to leave when he spoke to his father Charles of Canada at Christmas 2019.

Of the early conversations, he added, “My dad said, ‘Can you put it in writing?’

Harry said he would prefer not to but relented, adding: “He said there was nothing he could do unless it was put in writing. I put it in emails.’

Regarding footage of Meghan sighing, Harry said he messaged on January 1, 2 and 3.

The Duke adds: “In one of those I said if it didn’t work out we were willing to give up our Sussex titles if the need arose. That was the plan.”
