‘Doctor Who’: Yasmin Finney Cast as Rose for 60th Anniversary

Is Doctor Who bringing back a legendary companion?

Yasmin Finney (Heartstopper) will play a character named Rose in scenes that will air in 2023 as part of the show’s 60th anniversary celebrations, the BBC announced on Monday. Billie Piper previously portrayed the Doctor’s companion, Rose Tyler, alongside Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant.

Showrunner Russell T Davies said in a statement: “Life on Doctor Who gets brighter and wilder, how can there be another rose? You’ll find out in 2023, but it’s an absolute pleasure to welcome Yasmin to the set of Doctor Who. We all fell in love with her on Heartstopper, one of those shows that changes the world – and now Yasmin can change the Whoniverse!”

Finney added: “If anyone had told 8-year-old Yasmin that one day she would be part of this legendary show, I wouldn’t have believed them in a million years. This show holds a place in the hearts of so many people and to be seen as a trans actress by the legend Russell himself has not only shaped my year but my life. I can’t wait to start this journey and show you all how rose blooms. Getting ready.”

Finney joins returning stars David Tennant (aka the Tenth Doctor) and Catherine Tate (Donna) as they “reunite for the fight of their lives,” Davies teased.

As previously reported, Sex Education’s Ncuti Gatwa will step in as the show’s fourteenth Doctor starting in Season 14. His tenure begins in 2023, after Jodie Whittaker ended her tenure after another special airing later that year.
