In a short video, Microsoft explains the important steps when upgrading to Windows 11. The goal is not to lose any important files from your old PC.
The video in question was published via the Windows channel on YouTube. Called “Make your transition to Windows 11 easier,” it only takes a minute. The giant is trying to show that upgrading to Windows 11 is easy. The process begins with the need to create a backup via Windows Backup to ensure that the migration takes place with all important files and data. As an aside, the company emphasizes the importance of backing up these files via its OneDrive service. This would make them easier to access on the new PC. Interestingly, Microsoft also explains the ability to upgrade to Windows 11 while maintaining your personalized browsing experience on Edge, including saved passwords and bookmarks.
It is hard not to notice that all of this highlights above all its ecosystem, whether it is software or services.
Windows 11 is finding it difficult to impress after two years of existence
Windows 11 was released two years ago now with the hope that Windows 10 would quickly lose popularity. Unfortunately, not everything goes as planned. Windows 11 has difficulty convincing. The adoption rate is slow. The main reason is that the minimum system requirements are causing trouble for tens of millions of Windows 10 PCs. Your users are faced with the need to purchase additional hardware.
End of support for Windows 10 is scheduled for October 2025. If Microsoft is trying to convince people to massively adopt Windows 11, the decision to discontinue Windows 10 is not unanimous. For example, PIRG, also known as the Public Interest Research Group, is behind a petition asking Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella to reconsider this decision for several reasons. One of them concerns the environment, as there is a risk of witnessing “the largest ever increase in the number of discarded computers”, which would be at odds with the American company’s sustainability goals.
PIRG asks Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella to reconsider the end date of Windows 10 support. The date is set for October 2025. This request takes the form of a petition.
We do not know whether such a message will be heard. For now, the company remains discreet on the matter. It simply mentioned the introduction of a paid maintenance program after that date. This ESU program for Windows 10 will be available to the public. It should take three years.
According to StatCounter, 71.9% of PCs run Windows 10, while 22.95% use Windows 11. These numbers are crystal clear. Less than two years after its cancellation, Windows 10 is the most used PC operating system in the world.
The next big event is usually scheduled for next month with the release of the Moment 5 update for Windows 11. Later this year, Microsoft is expected to launch Windows 12, which will have AI capabilities.
