Dolphins-Chiefs become latest Ice Bowl, minus-5 at kickoff – NBC Sports

The infamous Ice Bowl between the Cowboys and Packers was played at minus 13 degrees. Other games since then have come close. Today's Dolphins-Chiefs game will be the latest.

The current forecast is that the temperature at the start of the game will be minus 5 degrees. It is expected to drop to minus-8 by the end of the game. With wind gusts approaching 30 miles per hour, the National Weather Service has issued a warning: “Avoid outdoor activities if possible. If you are outside, be sure to wear appropriate clothing, a hat and gloves.”

The NWS adds that exposed skin can suffer frostbite in as little as 10 minutes.

According to KMBC.com, the coldest game in NFL history was the Ice Bowl. Next up was the AFC Championship between the Chargers and Bengals in January 1982, with a kickoff temperature of minus 9 degrees (the wind chill was 59 minus). Third is the wild-card game between the Seahawks and Vikings in January 2016, which was played outdoors in Minnesota while the team's current stadium was being built. It was six degrees below zero that day. Fourth, the NFC Championship in January 2008 between the Giants and Packers. The temperature was four degrees below zero.

The Dolphins-Chiefs have a chance to push Brett Favre's final game as a Packer into fourth place on the list. That underscores the consequences for the Dolphins of last Sunday night's loss – and lost the chance to play at least two, if not three, postseason games in Miami.
