It was a treacherous evening because after 13 years of Don Matteo – Terence Hill seasons it could be unsettling not to see him again. Instead it went well. On Thursday evening, the new episode of the long-running hit won the performance for the first time by Raoul Bova in the role of Don Massimo, Don Matteo’s successor. There could be a “cancellation,” the fans leaving. But no. Ratings were all-time high and “Don Matteo 13” won the evening with 6,486,000 viewers, a 31.1% share, beating the competition on Su Canale 5 followed by Enrico Papi’s “Big Show” , followed by 1,502,000 viewers, which is a 9.5% share. Split. Raoul Bova was concerned about this new challenge but also relieved to have received Terence Hill’s ‘blessing’. A “blessing” that apparently has also reached the viewers, who are now linked to fiction, to Spoleto, to the Eternal, to Marshal Cecchini (Nino Frassica) and to the whole world that revolves around Don Matteo.
Raoul Bova-don Massimo’s entry into fiction was also “tiring”: everyone is hostile to him because for the small community there is only the real Don Matteo and they don’t fail to remind him of it at every moment. In the episode, Don Massimo’s past is revealed: his name is Massimo Sartori, he was a carbine in the special departments and he cannot reveal where Don Matteo is: they silenced him. At the end of the episode, Captain Oliveri (Maria Chiara Giannetta) discovers that Don Matteo is in Sudan: he got into a Foreign Ministry car with an unregistered number plate. A missionary friend was kidnapped and they asked him to leave to mediate with the kidnappers. At the end of the episode, the community also begins to accept and appreciate the presence of Don Massimo, and this also bodes well for future audiences.
