Donald Glover praises Malia Obama after giving former First Daughter her first post-college job as a screenwriter on his new Amazon series, saying the 23-year-old is “amazingly talented” and “really focused.”
Multigifenath, also known by his stage name Childish Gambino, was at the third season premiere of his FX series Atlanta on Thursday when he confirmed reports that the 23-year-old was working in the writers’ room on his latest project. .
Glover, 38, is a writer and executive producer on an upcoming series for Amazon, potentially titled The Hive, which is reportedly about a “Beyoncé-like character.” The concert is Obama’s first official performance since she graduated from Harvard University last year.
“She’s just an amazingly talented person,” the Vanity Fair actor said of Obama. “She is very focused and works very hard.”
He did not disclose how Obama, who interned on Lena Dunham’s Girls on HBO in 2015 and The Weinstein Company in 2017, got the job.
However, his brother Stephen Glover, who is also working on the upcoming Amazon project, said the brothers were interested “to listen to her stories and work with them,” suggesting they may have reached out to a college graduate.

Glover believes the former First Daughter has a promising future in the industry and “she’s going to have some really good stuff soon.” Obama is pictured in Los Angeles in January.
Glover said he thinks Obama has a promising future in the industry, telling the publication, “I feel like she’s just someone who’s going to have some really good stuff soon.”
“Her writing style is great,” he added.
Obama, who moved to Los Angeles for her first Hollywood appearance, also earned praise from Glover’s younger brother, Stephen.
The co-writer and executive producer of Atlanta also praised her work ethic and ideas, saying they are excited to have her on the team because she brings a “unique perspective” to the project.
“Donald always says perspective is important and people with different points of view are important in the writing room. And of course, she definitely has a unique take on everything,” he told Vanity Fair.
“So we wanted to hear her stories and work with us. When we listened to her stories and involved her in the work, we had a lot of good ideas.”
When asked how he felt about turning down Obama’s filing, he made it clear that she doesn’t get any special treatment in the writers’ room because of who her parents are.
Glover described his days in the writers’ room as a therapy session where they talk about what’s going on in their lives, saying that Obama’s “writing style is great.”
“Well, you know, we just hurt her feelings. We can’t take her lightly just because she [former] The president’s daughter, Stefan joked.
“No, she is very down to earth and cool. So it’s not a problem at all,” he added. “She has a lot of good ideas. She is gorgeous. She is just an ordinary person like everyone else.”
Glover did not mention whether Secret Service agents join Obama when she is at work, but he described her days in the writers room as a therapy session.
“We’re just talking about how we feel and what’s going on in our own lives, so our work and all the shows we do get very personal in that way,” he said. “And at the same time, it’s a lot of fun. We talk about everything, talk honestly about things and come up with all sorts of ideas.”
Under federal law, children of US presidents are protected by the Secret Service until they are 16 years old. Former President Barack Obama’s daughters Malia and Sasha received a short-term security extension when he left office in 2017.
It is unclear when security ended or if bodyguards were hired.
Glover added that working in the writers’ room “isn’t really as serious as people probably think”.
Obama, who moved to Los Angeles for her first Hollywood appearance, also worked with Glover’s younger brother, Stephen Glover (pictured).
When asked how he felt about turning down Obama’s offers, Stefan joked, “Well, you know, we just hurt her feelings,” adding that “she’s very down to earth.”
“We just laugh and joke with each other for hours and then just focus on what we really like,” he explained. “The writers room are probably my two favorite parts of the process. We just hang out all day and talk about things that make us laugh.”
Obama has long had an interest in filmmaking and went through a series of high-profile internships before graduating from Harvard last year.
She was still in high school when she worked as a production assistant on the 2014 sci-fi drama Survivors, starring Halle Berry. She later interned on HBO’s Girls in 2015 and The Weinstein Company in 2017.
Obama has built a reputation for a strong work ethic, and the Glovers aren’t the only ones impressed by the former First Daughter’s hard work and dedication over the years.
“She was fantastic,” Berry told Andy Cohen of Obama on Watch What Happens Live in 2017. – She was amazing. She is such a smart, beautiful young woman. Look at her mother and father, uh-huh.
The actress, who was admittedly a “big fan,” explained that it was difficult for people on set to view Obama as an assistant, even though she was “willing to do whatever an assistant is asked to do.”
“I had wild respect for her for that,” she said. “But no one could see her as a personal assistant. Although she tried and tried to be him, we just couldn’t see her as such. But, to her credit, she tried very hard to be one of them.”
Girls creator and star Lena Dunham also admired Obama that year, telling Howard Stern on his SiriusXM show that “she’s an angel.”

Obama’s younger sister Sasha (second from right) also lives in Los Angeles. It is assumed that the 20-year-old guy is a student at the University of Southern California.
“She was doing an internship at HBO, and they thought, what if she comes a couple of days a week to the set of Girls? She loved the show and I mean we obviously didn’t force her to go get coffee,” she said.
“You’re not going to send [the President’s daughter to get coffee]. But she wanted to complete all the tasks. It was cool. She was full of enthusiasm.”
Stern wanted to know if the then president’s daughter was on set when the naughty sex scenes were filmed, but Girls executive producer Jenny Conner said it wasn’t even an option for an underage teenager.
“Because of her age, we couldn’t actually film the sex scenes around her even if we wanted to,” she explained.
Obama’s younger sister, 20-year-old Sasha, also moved to Los Angeles.
She is believed to be a student at the University of Southern California after transferring from the University of Michigan.
Their mother, former First Lady Michelle Obama, flew to the West Coast earlier this month and treated them to dinner at the Roman-inspired Mother Wolfe by acclaimed chef Evan Funke in Hollywood.
This month, the sisters were also seen walking together.
